Scalable Cloud Architectures for Startups
How we architect relational databases, connection pooling, and multi-region edge caching for zero-downtime scaling.

Planning a mission-critical web application?
We architect robust, auto-scaling backends on PostgreSQL, AWS, and modern edge infrastructure.
01. The Relational Foundation
Startups often prematurely adopt complex microservice fabrics and distributed NoSQL databases before establishing solid schema invariants. In reality, modern PostgreSQL handles 99% of early-to-mid stage scale with unmatched reliability, ACID guarantees, and expressive SQL indexing.
At Synis, we build on strongly-typed schemas using modern ORMs (Drizzle / Prisma) combined with automated database migrations that prevent schema drift across development and production environments.
02. Connection Pooling & Serverless Pitfalls
Serverless functions and edge runtimes spawn hundreds of ephemeral instances during traffic spikes. If each function opens an unpooled TCP connection to your primary database, PostgreSQL quickly exhausts its max connection limit, causing catastrophic cascade failures.
Deploying connection poolers (such as PgBouncer or AWS RDS Proxy) prevents connection exhaustion and maintains consistent sub-10ms query dispatch even under intense traffic surges.
03. Three-Tier Caching Hierarchy
A scalable system minimizes compute pressure through intentional caching tiers:
- Edge CDN Cache: Static assets, images, and pre-rendered HTML served in <50ms from nodes nearest to the user.
- Application Memory / Redis: Session tokens, frequent query results, and rate limiting counters stored in sub-millisecond in-memory data structures.
- Database Query Indexing: Partial indexes and multi-column indexes ensuring disk reads remain virtually non-existent for routine workflows.
04. Disaster Recovery & Automated Backups
Infrastructure is only as resilient as its recovery procedure. Automated daily snapshots, point-in-time recovery (PITR), and environment parity between staging and production guarantee that your data is safe and business continuity is uninterrupted.
